David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature
Red Deer Village Holiday Park, the campsite on the edge of Glasgow, Scotland, takes great care to help our wildlife. Nature is very important to us, as highlighted by our numerous conservation and environmental awards. We are active participants in the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature, a BH&HPA scheme focused on encouraging parks to create habitat for local wildlife. The scheme includes multiple challenges for parks to achieve. Red Deer Village Holiday Park have won four so far!
Home Sweet Home Nature Challenge
The Home Sweet Home Challenge focuses on the creation of habitat and artificial homes to help animals on our campsite survive and thrive. We put up bird boxes and feeders in high traffic areas of the park so everyone could see them. Some of our own staff built hedgehog boxes and an owl box from spare bits of timber. Hedgehog boxes have been placed near hedgerows so they have safe and undisturbed travel.
Everyone Active Nature Challenge
Red Deer Village Holiday Park achieved the David Bellamy Everyone Active Challenge by encouraging guests and residents to get involved with nature. We held resident photography competitions, gardening competitions and got involved with local community projects.
In October 2025, we visited Kirkintilloch Men’s Shed. A charity devoted to encouraging members to get out and learn new skills and meet like-minded people in their workshop. They crafted some new wildlife boxes for us and an insect hotel!
Pollinator Patch Nature Challenge
We achieved the Pollinator Patch challenge through planting 425 square meters of cotoneaster coral beauty. This is a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects. We planted this along an empty area of banking that will remain undisturbed. We also participated in Plantlife’s No Mow May. An area of grass on the way to our touring field was left uncut for several months to encourage insects.
You may have also noticed on a visit to our Glasgow holiday park that an area behind our chalets and holiday homes is uncut to allow grasses and clover to flower and provide nectar sources. This is in addition to our beetle banks, log piles, organic matter and native wildflowers, all for the benefit of bees and insects.
Wonderful Wetlands Nature Challenge
Our most recent David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature challenge has been Wonderful Wetlands. We achieved this through our three rain water ponds on the park. Birds bathe and drink from these ponds and we’ve also spotted ducks, dragonflies, goldfish and frogs.

RSPB Bronze Wild Challenge
Red Deer Village Holiday Park have also achieved the bronze wild challenge medal from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)! We have previously held meetings with the RSPB to discuss getting involved and hints on helping wildlife thrive.
