Eco Friendly Camping – Waste Management with a Green Heart

eco friendly camping

At Red Deer Village Holiday Park in Glasgow, we believe that caring for the environment starts with the everyday habits we adopt. That begins with how we dispose of rubbish and waste, but ranges from energy saving to protecting habitats. We’re proud to have invested in eco-friendly systems that make it easier for our Scottish camping guests to do their part.

Waste & Water Disposal Made Simple

For eco friendly touring and camping guests

  • A dedicated chemical-waste disposal point alongside one grey-water disposal station.
  • A clearly labelled, diagram-supported rubbish and recycling hub to help you sort waste easily.

For guests in static caravans, holiday homes, and chalets

  • Four bins (general waste, paper, plastic/glass, and food) positioned right outside your Glasgow accommodation.
  • Clear signage and bin-use instructions on each noticeboard to prevent mix-ups and educate guests.

By streamlining the disposal process, we reduce contamination in recycling bins and ensure more waste is handled responsibly. We also keep our holiday park in Scotland spotless and guest-friendly!

Our Eco-Efforts Go Beyond Waste

Our commitment to the planet extends far beyond bin systems:

  • EV charging stations — driven by sustainability, with 3 EV chargers available in the holiday park and 1 at our residents’ hub.
  • Plastic reduction, new hand dryers and non-polluting electric buggies — ongoing steps to lower our carbon footprint and reduce waste.
  • Wildlife havens — two chemical-free wildlife ponds, wildflower planting, native tree species, hedgerows and more create spaces that support bees, butterflies, frogs, birds and other species.
  • Waterless urinals reduce water usage and rainwater butts located at the back of our holiday park office are used to water plants.

Why it Matters

  • Reduces contamination — well‑marked bins help keep recyclables clean and effective.
  • Promotes responsibility — noticeboards and diagrams make sorting intuitive, even for first‑time campers.
  • Supports local wildlife — our broader conservation projects (from ponds to native planting) complement proper waste management.

Awards & Recognition

Our environmental approach isn’t just practical—it’s been recognised at the highest levels:

🌿 David Bellamy Conservation Scheme

We are incredibly proud to have received prestigious special recognitions as part of David Bellamy Conservation Scheme. Theses accolades, from the Holiday and Residential Parks Association (HARPA), highlight our commitment to biodiversity and wildlife-friendly habitats. Wildflower meadows, hedgerows, rain-fed ponds, and honeybee-friendly planting are just a few of our initiatives. Our successful pledges include Home Sweet Home, Everyone Active, Pollinator Patch and Wonderful Wetlands.

Essential Eco-Friendly Camping Tips

  1. Bring reusables – Use refillable water bottles, crockery, or cutlery. It greatly reduces single-use plastic waste.
  2. Pre-sort at home – Consider having a small sorting tray in your touring caravan/ motorhome/ tent for paper, plastic, and food; makes binning faster and cleaner.
  3. Compost food scraps – Use the food-waste bins provided. Compost-friendly waste reduces landfill volume and supports our composting system.
  4. Respect grey/black‑water stations – Only dispose of grey/black-water where marked. Never in general bins or drains.
  5. Secure bin lids – Make sure to close lids after use — this prevents wildlife from accessing waste and avoids littering.
  6. Flatten cardboard boxes – Saves space and reduces pickup frequency.
  7. Use chemical disposal points properly – For caravan chemical-waste only — never pour down drains.
  8. Educate your group – Point out bins and instructions to children or new campers — they’ll follow good habits too!
  9. Carry a small bag for litter – Keep one in the car or tent for odds and ends until you reach recycling bins.
  10. Leave No Trace – Before checkout, do a final litter sweep: around your unit, drive, and outdoor seating.
