Local rainy day activities Glasgow

We all know Scotland is subject to the constant threat of a rainy day – however, that’s not going to stop us enjoying our holidays is it?! Staying at Red Deer Village Holiday Park, you’re never far from entertainment. So, when those clouds come over and it gets rainy, don’t be tempted to stay inside when there’s so many different attractions to see and local activities to do.

If you’re stuck for ideas, take a look at our list of local rainy day activities – we’re sure you’ll find something to do!

For The Culture Vultures

A little drizzle and wind shouldn’t stop you from sightseeing – especially when there’s so much culture on Red Deer Village Holiday Park’s doorstep!

If it’s really coming down out there, museums provide the perfect cover for you, as well as entertainment! There are hundreds of fantastic museums across Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Edinburgh and Stirling. If you enjoy taking your time and browsing thought-provoking art galleries, try Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, or Edinburgh’s City Art Centre. Like learning about our world, and history? You’ll find great displays at Glasgow’s iconic Kelvingrove Museum, or Edinburgh’s large National Museum of Scotland. These museums will keep you and your family busy for hours, as there’s also usually interactive exhibits.

If you’ve never been to our local cities before, then tour buses are a brilliant way to get to know them. Don’t be put off by the rain – there’s ample cover inside the buses! These tours visit all the main areas of the cities, with fun and historical facts on the way round. Hop on and off the bus to make the most of the experience!

There’s always something exciting on in theatres across the cities. As well as the bigger, more well known ones, check out some of our independent theatres. In Glasgow you’ll find plays and musicals a plenty, by local and national companies, in Cottiers, Tron or Mitchell Theatre.

Fun & Entertainment

If you find yourself travelling with a larger party, or with kids, you might want a livelier activity to keep everyone entertained.

There are so many choices for local entertainment and activities where you can burn off some energy inside, away from the rainy day. For day-long entertainment Glasgow has a few areas to look into. Firstly, around the area of Kinning Park you’ll find a roller skating rink Rollerstop and trampoline park Ryze. For other physical activities head to somewhere like Soar at Intu Braehead for everything; from miniature golf, to snowsports!

For something less physical, but still entertaining, try Escape Rooms Scotland which have venues in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. Book into one of the rooms and beat the clock to escape it by solving a series of puzzles and riddles! Alternatively the award-winning Edinburgh Dungeons are a great laugh for all ages. Enjoy a few scares whilst learning about the gruesome history of Edinburgh, and take on the Drop Dead: Drop Ride.

Glasgow’s Imax cinema at the Science Centre is also great immersive entertainment without having to move a muscle. Many feature films are available to see in 3D there.

Shopping

Luckily, if all else fails, Scotland is well-equipped for rainy day shopping! There are a plethora of indoor shopping centres, outlets and markets for you to escape the weather in.

There are some great indoor shopping centres in Glasgow just a short bus, train or car journey from Red Deer Village Holiday Park; including Braehead and Silverburn just South of the city. In the City Centre you’ll find many of the main shops in Buchanan Galleries. Don’t forget to stop into Princes Square to take in beautiful architecture, as well as a peek into the more up-market shops.

On a weekend there are also usually some indoor food markets well worth a visit. A returning favourite is The Big Feed in Govan, which features pop up stalls from a variety of local restaurants. From seafood and burritos, to gourmet hotdogs and burgers – there’s something for everyone.

If you’re a fan of a vintage fair, keep an eye out for Granny Would Be Proud. It takes place in Glasgow in the stunning converted theatre Hillhead Bookclub every month!
