Stirling Castle (40 minutes by car)
One of Scotland’s most famous must-see castles is Stirling Castle. It played a key role in the Wars of Independence and was once home to Mary, Queen of Scots. Explore the royal palace, Great Hall, and sweeping views of the surrounding Stirling countryside. You can also view the Wallace Monument from the grounds.

Bothwell Castle (30 minutes)
Set above a bend in the River Clyde, Bothwell Castle is one of Scotland’s largest and finest 13th-century castles. Though now a picturesque ruin, its towering walls and round keep still impress.
Good to know: It’s quieter than the big-name castles, great for a peaceful stroll and picnic.

Linlithgow Palace (50 minutes)
The stunning lakeside ruin of Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Wander through grand halls, climb spiral staircases, and enjoy the beautiful surrounding parklands.
Bonus: The nearby town of Linlithgow is perfect for lunch or a coffee break.

Doune Castle (50 minutes)
Game of Thrones fan? Monty Python lover? Outlander addict? Doune Castle is a pop-culture landmark. Aside from its star power, it’s a beautifully preserved medieval fortress with audio guides that bring the past to life.
Fun Fact: It doubled as Winterfell in Game of Thrones and Castle Leoch in Outlander.

Blackness Castle (55 minutes)
Nicknamed “The Ship That Never Sailed,” this fortress juts into the Firth of Forth like a great stone battleship. With panoramic coastal views and fascinating history, Blackness Castle is perfect for a half-day trip.
