Family Fun

The Easter holidays are a fantastic opportunity to spend quality time with your family. Edinburgh has lots of Easter activities going on, across various heritage sites, museums and parks.

Take part in the Easter Egg trail at Royal Botanic Gardens starting from John Hope Gateway (1st-17th April). Complete the trail, and claim your yummy chocolate reward from Mackie’s of Scotland! A little further out to the East of Edinburgh there’s also a Giant Easter egg trail at Vogrie Country Park.

Laugh and Learn

Edinburgh is a fantastic city for kids, with museums and heritage sites doing a really good job of combining play and learning. There are lots of interactive shows and activities taking place across various venues.

There’s a whole host of exciting Easter activities going on at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh (1st-16th April); from learning about all about polar wildlife, to meeting scientists who are pioneering new virtual reality technologies. Kids will be able to make their own polar wildlife art creation, and talk to scientists at the forefront of Polar research and exploration. Furthermore, if you’ve ever wondered about the existence of aliens, Dynamic Earth are hosting Meet the Expert sessions with scientists who are researching the possibilities of life on other planets!

Camera Obscura is a classic Edinburgh destination – the oldest visitor attraction in the city! Here you’ll find incredible views of the Edinburgh City skyline, exhibits to do with light, as well as optical illusions in the magic gallery.

There’s lots going on in venues across the city in association with the Edinburgh International Science Festival. With varying exhibitions on topics such as health, space, virtual reality, robotics and much more! Check out Monkey Business at NMS (on till 27th April) where you can explore different species of monkeys, how they survive in their different habitats, and even learn about our primate past. Or head to Summerhall for fascinating interactive shows such as ‘Look Up’ which focuses on space, or ‘Zombie Science: Worst Case Scenario’.

Finally, for those dinosaur-loving families – head to see Dinosaur World at Festival Theatre Edinburgh (10th/11th April). This is a great new interactive show. Meet a host of impressive prehistoric creatures. Including every child’s favourite flesh-eating giant, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a Triceratops, Giraffatitan and Segnosaurus, to name a few!

Get Active

Looking to get rid of some energy? There are plenty of places for you and the family to get a breath of fresh air, and get active!

Take a trip to one of Edinburgh’s many beautiful parks across the city. From the spacious Holyrood Park and the Meadow’s for run arounds, to the stunning Prince’s Street Gardens and hidden Dunbar’s Close.

If you’re wanting a bit more excitement than that, the Snowsports Centre might be the best place for you. Get lessons for you and the family in skiing and snowboarding – or just have great fun tubing. If you do like a bit of a challenge you might also want to check out wall climbing at Alien Rock. Alternatively, there’s Ryze and Roll, which boasts a skate park and trampoline park!
